The Orakzai Agency was formally created and inaugurated during December, 1973 at a grand Jirga at Samana. The headquarters of the agency are at Hangu District, but tehsil-level headquarters are situated in Kalaya and Ghiljo. Orakzai Agency is bordered in the north with Khyber Agency, in the east with FR Kohat, in the south with Kohat and Hangu and in the west with Kurram Agency. It is spread over an area of 1,538 square kilometers.

Orakzai Agency is a hilly region with a fertile valley. Its territory comprises of a mountainous tract, dissected by numerous dry water courses. The elevation of the hills varies from over 10,000 feet (3,000 m) in the west and to less than 6,650 feet (2,030 m) in the east, while that of the plain area varies from 5,200 to 5,500 feet (1,700 m), above sea level. Important peaks are Sangla (6325 ft.) and Chara Kandaco (5643 ft.). The major valleys in Orakzai Agency are: Khanki, Mastura and Khurmana, whereas the two major streams are the Mastura and Khanki Toi, both originating from the hills in the west and running to the east. kalaya is the tehsil of orakzai distric.

Land use data from 2012 shows that the total cultivated area is 17,052 hectares, with an uncultivated area of 136,709 hectares. The Orakzai Agency comprises of Lower Orakzai Agency, Upper Orakzai Agency, Central Orakzai Agency and Ismailzai. According to the 1998 census, the total population of Orakzai Agency was 0.2 million. However, according to recent estimates from 2012, the population of the area has increased to 0.3 million.
